What is Value Methodology?

Value Methodology (VM) is a dynamic project value improvement and creative problem solving process that exists under several different names, such as value engineering, value analysis and value management. There are no essential differences between these designations and they are, for all practical purposes, interchangeable. Value Methodology is formally defined as:

The systematic application of recognized techniques which identify the functions of the product or service, establish the worth of those functions, and provide the necessary functions to meet the required performance at the lowest overall cost.

Value Methodology holds the distinction of being the ONLY project improvement process that is federally mandated by the United States government for use on major project expenditures. VM is also used throughout the private sector as well on virtually every type of project imaginable, from industrial design and manufacturing processes; facility and infrastructure design and construction; business processes and procedures.

Value Management Strategies, Inc. is pleased to present the following courses delivered in a user-friendly, web-based format:

Fundamentals of Value Methodology

This course is based upon a traditional 40-hour training seminar that has been converted into an exciting, web-based format that allows you to learn at your own pace while interacting with other students and the instructors. Click here to download a brochure that includes more details on the course.  Group discounts are available for qualifying organizations - please contact rob@vms-inc.com for details.

This course has been approved by both SAVE International (SAVE) and the Project Management Institute (PMI).  The successful completion of this course, which is a SAVE Approved Module 1 Value Methodology Training Workshop, allows students to apply for the Associate Value Specialist (AVS) certification through SAVE.  In addition to this, this course has been approved by PMI and is worth 40 Professional Development Units (PDUs).  The cost of this course is $1,295.

Value Methodology:  A Project Manager's Overview

This exciting and innovative course has been designed to provide project managers from any industry with a fundamental understanding of Value Methodology.  The primary course objective is to provide project managers with the necessary information to begin to apply Value Methodology in their chosen discipline.  This course will teach VM within the universal context of the “project” and will utilize the framework and terminology identified in the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) developed by the Project Management Institute.   Click here to download the brochure.

This 15-hour course is a presented in both a traditional face-to-face format as well as in an innovative, web-based e-learning environment.  This material presented in this course is in alignment with SAVE International.  This course has also been accredited by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and is worth 15 Professional Development Units (PDUs).   Much of the content of this course has been excerpted from our certified Module 1 Training Course.  Unlike the Module 1 Training, however, this course does not include the application of Value Metrics or the application of VM on a “live” project.  Students may apply the 15 PDUs gained from this course toward either obtaining or renewing their Project Management Professional (PMP) or Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certifications through the Project Management Institute.  The cost of this course is $495.

Introduction to Value Metrics

Value Metrics is a system of techniques designed to compliment traditional Value Methodology.  It is predicated upon the theory that value is an expression of the relationship between the performance of a function, and the cost of acquiring it.  Through the application of Value Metrics, students will learn how to define and measure performance; better understand the relationship of cost and performance to function; enhance the analysis of functions by targeting performance deficiencies; develop alternative solutions to problems that equally consider cost and performance; and evaluate alternative solutions relative to total value improvement.  Click here to download the brochure.

This course has been designed for those already familiar with the Value Methodology, which is often referred to by a variety of terms including Value Engineering, Value Analysis and Value Management.  References will be made throughout this course to VM concepts and techniques, so it is important to possess a working knowledge of VM in order to fully appreciate Value Metrics.

This course is an 8-hour course that is provided alternatively in a traditional face-to-face format as well as in an innovative web-based e-learning environment.  This course has been accredited by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and is worth 8 Professional Development Units (PDUs).  The contents of this course are in alignment with the traditional practice of Value Methodology  as recognized by SAVE International.  Students may also apply the 8 PDUs gained from this course toward either obtaining or renewing their Project Management Professional  (PMP) or Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certifications through the Project Management Institute.  The cost of this course is $295.

Introduction to Function Analysis

Function Analysis describes the process of defining, classifying and evaluating the functions of any project be it a process, product, facility or service.  It provides a powerful means of clearly and simply understanding complex projects using language everyone can understand.  It also provides a method for identifying areas within a project that can be targeted for value improvement

The primary course objective is to provide learners with an overview of the theory and practical application of Function Analysis, a body of knowledge that forms the basis for the broader discipline of Value Methodology.  This course will appeal to both the novice as well as those experienced in the application of Function Analysis.  Special emphasis is placed on helping learners become more proficient in the application of the Function Analysis System Technique, which is commonly referred to as FAST diagramming.  Click here for the brochure.

These courses are based upon the textbook, “Fundamentals of Value Methodology,” written by Robert B. Stewart, CVS-Life. The course is based upon this text and provides students with a solid grounding in the theory and techniques of Value Methodology.

Interactive Lectures: Hours of professionally narrated lectures brings the textbook alive using Flash animation. Students will engage in interactive exercises to further develop their understanding of the course material and reinforce their skills in applying techniques.

Quizzes:
Students will engage in exams to test their learning retention at the end of each interactive module. Their results in progress are tracked on the Learning Management System (LMS).

Virtual Classroom: The virtual classroom is comprised of three independent elements that provide a rich, interactive learning environment between students and instructors. The Virtual Classroom includes the following elements:

  • Discussion Board: With weekly discussion topics and student forums.
  • Interactive Whiteboard: An ingenious tool for drawing diagrams and sharing visual concepts.
  • Live Chat: An interactive chat room to allow for real time student-instructor tutorials and Q&A sessions.

Live Projects: Students will engage in applying course concepts and techniques to real projects and exercises from a variety of technical and non-technical disciplines in a “virtual team” environment. Students are invited to bring their own projects or select a project from a library of archived projects.
